Konkret hat er im Rahmen seiner Dr. Arbeit ein Internet-Label gegründet, dessen Vertriebsmodell ‚peer to peer‘ Transaktionen zwischen Künstlern und Fans ermöglichen soll.
Der Ansatz verfolgt eine Weiterentwicklung von Experimenten wie sie z.B. Radiohead bereits 2004 zur Veröffentlichung von ‚In Rainbows‘ gemacht haben. Ziel ist es den Mittelsmann (wie Bandcamp oder PayPal) komplett überflüssig zu machen und den direkten Austausch zwischen Musikern und Käufern zu fördern.
Da schaue ich doch glatt mal ob ich noch etwas Ether locker habe :)
Natürlich gibt es das Album z.B. auch auf Bandcamp. Es geht mal wieder um die Idee bei der ich mir sehr erhoffen würde, dass wir so etwas mal in größere Stil sehen. Vielleicht lassen sich Radiohead ja nochmal irgendwann bitten…
In terms of the wider project this is part of: My PhD thesis is about exploring what possible uses and benefits there are for using blockchain within music distribution. The main project is the founding of a blockchain record label ( www.linebreakrecords.com ) and developing various cryptocurrency based music download stores (like the one in the post above). I also organised a blockchain ticketed live music live stream which was a fun project (you ‚bought‘ tickets to access the stream with rinkeby testnet Ether).
Basically my findings so far are that blockchain offers potential advantages in direct-to-fan selling due the ‚generally‘ lower transaction fees and the fact it allows the artist to remove middlemen like PayPal or platforms like bandcamp / iTunes etc. The blockchain transactions also process much faster, which is nice. There are also things called smartcontracts which are useful in automating processes like splitting received money up between bandmembers.
