The ALPS CP10SJ550A Kanji Keyboard is a specialized keyboard developed in the 1980s for inputting Japanese characters. It was primarily used for computer-based typesetting systems like those from Morisawa. With 542 keys and a 30×16 matrix layout, it was one of the largest keyboards of its time. Each key could represent up to 9 characters, controlled by additional functions such as a kind of numeric keypad. The device was designed to allow direct input of over 4,000 Kanji characters before modern input methods like IMEs (Input Method Editors) were developed.

The keyboard weighs approximately 11.92 kg and was likely manufactured in 1989. It is an impressive example of technological history, showcasing the challenges of digitizing Japanese writing before more efficient methods were introduced.
